The Escapes are leading a funk pop jailbreak
The Escapes' sound is a unique brand of jazz, funk, and pop with a twist. Citing the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, Vulfpeck, Maroon 5, and Stevie Wonder, this White Rock based quintet is going places.
What are some of your long-term goals as a band?
Our long term goals as a band are to improve our musicianship, songwriting, and performance. We look forward to recording more music together and to playing more shows, both in Vancouver and beyond.
What has been your most memorable show?
Our most memorable show, as of right now, is when we played at the Railway Stage and Beer Cafe for the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in June 2018. It was one of the best crowds we had ever played for. The overall energy was so awesome and all of us fed off of it. We just had a lot of fun!
What bands/artists are you currently listening to?
Snarky Puppy, Knower, and John Mayer are consistently coming out with cool material. Some of the more pop oriented artists we're listening to right now is Hey Ocean!, Lawrence, and PJ Morton.
What's unique about the Vancouver music scene that you won't find elsewhere?
Vancouver is so much more than an indie rock city (even though we love that too). There is a hip hop scene, a heavier rock and roll scene, and we have been able to catch a lot of jazz and funk inspired music being played in all sorts of venues. Being a band that originated from a myriad of genres and influences, seeing Vancouver be so diverse musically and seeing how its bands support each other is something we love and appreciate.
Who are some of your favourite Vancouver-based bands/artists?
There is so much talent in Vancouver! We've done a lot of shows with Air Stranger and Derek Pitts & The Bullets, both bands that are worth checking out. Rollin' Trainwreck is a bluegrass country rock band and one of the members, Jesse Burch, used to be our guitar teacher and has known us since we were kids! We also grew up with the girls from Fionn; their lyrics and their voices together are excellent. HAWKING and the Big Coast are two Van bands that always put on a killer show, and Gentle Mind has a lot of similar influences as us and they have a really cool vibe.
